The book starts in Weed when Lennie began to have a facination with soft things. He got a little too comfortable and touched a womans dress. This woman then went and told everyone in the town that she was raped by Lennie. If they didn't want to get killed, they had to run. That is exactly what they did. That is how the get to Salinas at their new job.
SALINAS
Shhhhhh
Candy has a very old dog who seems to be struggling sometimes. Carlson tries to explain the Candy that the dog is not doing anyone any good and is only a burden. This introduces the idea that if someone or something isn't a benifit or does someone good, they aren't worth anything. It is foreshadowing what will happen later in the book.
Kill him!
Someone took my gun!
On a Sunday afternoon Lennie was in the barn with his puppy because it was still too young to be away from it's mother. He underestamated his own strength and when petting the puppy he accidentely snapped it's neck. In panic he threw the puppy across the room trying to come up with ways to tell George without him being mad. Lennie was afraid that George wouldn't let him tend the rabits in their future home.
After Lennie kills the puppy, Curley's wife unexpectidley walks into the barn and assures him it is okay to talk to her. She then goes into how awful her life is on the ranch and how bad her marriage is. After some talking she asks about Lennie and his fasination with animals and soft things. Curley's wife then offers him to feel her hair. He loves it, almost too much. He holds on too tight which scares her so she screams. In fear of getting in trouble from George he shuts her up with his hand over her neck. In the process he breaks her neck leaving her there dead.
Candy finds her first and immediately tells George. They decide to make sure everyone knows that George had nothing to do with it so George leaves acting like he saw nothing. Candy notifies the ranch of what has happened. Curley orders to find him and kill him. Moments after this order Carlson notices his gun is missing and assumes that Lennie had taken it which wasn't true.
George knowing will Lennie will go, goes there. Once Lennie sees him he apoligizes and insits he can go and run off to a cave and take care of himself. After George denying the ideas Lennis asks for George to tell him the story of how they are just going to leave now and get their own place. In the middle of the story George shoots Lennie in the back of the head knowing there was no other option at that point.
