This relate to principle of conservation of momentum. Before that, you must know the principle of momentum first.
Huh, I never expect that I would explain about Physics to other people.
The principle of the momentum is the total momentum before interaction is equal to the total momentum after interaction.
BOOOM !
The cannon is a best example of interaction which is an explosion.
We look at explosions in the same way as we look at collisions, the total momentum before is equal to the total momentum after.
In explosions the total momentum before is zero.
If we look at the cannons there, we can see that the whole system is not moving. So, the total momentum after is zero.
