"You go get wood. An' don't you fool around. It'll be dark before long."
"George, you want I should go away and leave you alone?"
"He's my... cousin. I told his old lady I'd take care of him."
"You said I was your cousin, George."
"The boss was expectin' you last night."
"You wouldn' tell?"
"What'd he do in Weed?"......... "He ain't mean, I can tell a mean guy a mile off."
George and Lennie were best friends. They ran away from Weed because Lennie wanted to touch a girl's dress and she told the townspeople that she was raped. Lennie and George ran away because if they stayed Lennie would have been shot! Lennie and George were dropped off 10 miles from the ranch they were supposed to work at. Lennie was mad but after they gathered wood, slept by a lake and ate beans for dinner.
"I'll take 'um back. I didn't mean no harm,George. Honest I didn't I jus' wanted to pet 'um a little."
When George and Lennie woke up they finished walking and arrived at the ranch. Candy a person who worked at the ranch showed them around and said that the Boss was expecting them yesterday. George and Lennie went to talk to boss and George did all the talking because he wanted to get the job and he didn't want Lennie to mess it up.
"I don't know, We gotta get a big stake together."
"You know where's a place like that?"
"George, how long's it gonna be till we get that little place an' live on the fatta the lan'-an' rabbits?"
After work, Slim and George played solitaire and George was hesitant about telling Slim why they left Weed and what happened. George trusted him and told him the story. Slim was surprised but understood the situation. George was happy to get it off his chest and talk to someone other than Lennie.
"What the hell you laughin' at?..... I'll show ya who's yella!"
"Make 'um let me alone,George.... Make 'um stop,George."
Lennie got to keep one of the puppies that were born. If Lennie didn't take the puppy they would have drowned it. Lennie kept playing with the puppy and he kept taking it out of the nest even though he still needs his mother for milk. George yelled at Lennie for that but he listens to him even though he doesn't want to.
Lennie and George started talking about having their own ranch again and Candy started listening in. He said that its a good idea and they all had a long conversation of what kind of animals they will have at the ranch and that they will all split the cost othe ranch. They all felt free but they must make sure that Curly or the Boss dosen't hear them because they might get fired.
After Curly was done looking for his wife he came into the barn and he starting beating Lennie because he thought he was laughing at him but he was actully daydreaming of the ranch. They started fighting and Lennie was too scared but he punched Curly in the face and his nose started bleeding. Curly gave up and they stopped fighting. Lennie asked George "Can I still tend the rabbits?" George smiled and said yes of course you can.
