I'm Prince Klemens von Metternich, foreign minister of Austria
Balance of Power
Holy Alliance and the Concert of Europe
Let's make a series of alliances that ensure that other nations will help if another Revolution broke out
Even though the Revolution was extremely difficult, it left a great platform for the beginning of a new era!
Legacy of the French Revolution
The five "great powers" made most of the decisions after Napoleon left the throne. They included representatives from Russia, Prussia, Great Britain, France, and most importantly Austria. The foreign minister was the most influential of them all. They had three goals including prevent future aggression, restore Europe's royal families, and restore a balance of power.
In 1815, Czar Alexander I, Emperor Francis I of Austria, and King Frederick William III of Prussia signed an agreement called the Holy Alliance, in which they pledged to base their relations with other nations on Christian principles in order to combat the forces of revolution. In addition, Metternich created a series of alliances called the Concert of Europe.
The Congress of Vienna left a legacy that would influence world politics for the next 100 years. After many years of power diminishing and increasing, many colonies and countries started to declare their independence and break away from their home country. The French Revolution changed the social attitudes and assumptions that had dominated Europe and changed peoples views of democracy to ensure equality and justice.
