Dally explains to Johnny and Ponyboy how CHerry came to the vacant lot in her little 'ol Sting Ray the other night and said that she felt the whole thing was her fault and that she would testify that the Socs were drunk and looking for a fight and that Johnny fought back in self-defense. (Page 73)
At the Dairy Queen, Johnny announces that Ponyboy and him were going to go back and turn themselves in. Dally cussed under his breath after they left the Dairy Queen to go back to the church. Ponyboy is relieved that Johnny wants to turn himself in. (Page 74)
I'm going to turn myself in.
When they reached the top of Jay Mountain, Dally saw that the church was on fire. Johnny and Ponyboy jump out of the car and hastily ran to the sizzling flames of the church to save the children. (Page 77)
Let's go Johnny!
Ponyboy and Johnny knocked out a waindow of the church and jumped in to save the children. Once all the children were safe, Ponyboy jumps out, but the roof came down on Johnny and pinned him to the ground (page 78 - 79)
I'm coming to save you!
Ponyboy wakes up in the ambulance. Jerry the teacher is in the ambulance with him and tells Ponyboy that Dally is fine but Johnny isn't doing too well. Jerry says they ared heroes but Ponyboy says that they aren't heroes, just greasers. (Page 80-81)
You're such a hero you could be Superman.
No, I'm as greasy as potato chips.
Ponyboy is in the hospital's waiting room when Sodapop and Darry come and they hug. Pony apologizes to Darry for worrying him and Darry tells ponyboy how he couldn't take it if something happened to him like their mom and dad. Pony knew that everything would be okay now. (Page 83-84)
