  • Charlie thought that he failed tests that he can't fail. "I had a test today. I think I faled it." (672). They decided to use him for the surgery. "They said that maybe they will still use me" (673). Luckily the surgery was a success. The operashun dint hurt. He did it while I was sleeping." (677).
  • Resolution
  • Charlie was getting more intelligent to the point he was getting smarter than Ms. Kinnian. "I an only see a little bit of that, Charlie, and I won't go much higher than I am now." (696)
  • Theme
  • Sadly, he got so smart, he got fired from his job. " 'But how can you say that, Fanny? What's wrong with a man becoming intelligent and wanting to acquire knowledge and understanding of the world around him?' " (685). He made a theory after Algernon died. "I am sending you a copy of my report entitled, 'The Algernon-Gordon Effect: A Study of Structure and Function of Increased Intelligence' " (689). He started to get dumber again. "Why can't I remember? I've got to fight. I lie in bed for days and I don't know who or where I am." (690)
  • He then decided to leave town so no one felt bad for him. No one knows about him to this day. "Thats why Im going away from New York for good. I dont want to do nothing like that agen. I dont want Miss Kinnian to feel sorry for me." (693)
  • One theme that the author wants the reader to understand is that we were born a certain way for a reason. "I cant wait to be smart like my best frends Joe Carp and Frank Reilly." (665). He didn't understand that they were not smart either. He was willing to change to be like them, though.
