Time to lighten these pockets of all this money
"Your father's no better than the niggers and trash he works for" (Lee 102)
That'll Show her
On Jem's twelth birthday he wanted to take his sister and himself out into town to spend his birthday money.
That doesn't matter Jem. Now go to her home and accept the consequences that have been brought to you.
But she was sayin all those mean things to you and all I was doin was trying to protect your image
On the way into town Ms.Dubose was accusing of Jem and scout of playing hooky and making a mockery of there father Atticus. Jem did want to have a swing at Ms.Dubose, but he had previously already promised Atticus that he wouldn't get into any more brawls.
That's right you get every last one of them.
Jem being in rage decided to get vengeance for what Ms.Dubose had said about his father Atticus, he started to demolish her garden.
Atticus caught word of what Jem had done to Ms.duboe's flowers and why he had done it. He also instructs Jem to go and apologize to Ms.Duboe. Jems punishment is to read to Ms.Dubose every afternoon for a month.
Jem does go reluctantly to Ms.Duboes home to apologize and clean up the mess that he had cause to her yard.
A lesson Atticus wants Jem to have in this experience was to really get to know Ms.Dobose's courage from intaking morphine for the reason she wanted to leave the world "beholden to nothing and nobody".
