Two characters with the last names of Rainsford and Whitney set out on a journey to explore the fine arts of hunting and to find the best spot to hunt. They come across a rather large island and decide to set sail there. While on there trip there, Rainsford had become startled in his sleep and fell off of the boat and managed to swim back to shore.
Rainsford made it safely to the island and had no idea where he was. He heard the shot of a pistol on the island and swam to where he had heard the sound. He made it the island and followed the sound of gunshots and the brightness of the lights that he had seen. He went up to the house and knocked on the door. He met a man by the name of General Zarrof.
He met and chatted with General Zaroff. Zaroff told him he was a good hunter and had been hunting since he was little. Rainsford sensed that something fishy was going on when General Zaroff said that he created his own species to hunt because the animals he was hunting were too boring. Zaroff hunts people. Zaroff challenges Rainsford to a hunting war. Rainsford was unsure at first, but then he accepted the challenge. The hunt between the two men had begun.
The hunt was on between the two men. Rainsford ran for his life to find a good hiding spot and set up a good trap to hunt Zaroff. Zaroff was on the hunt for Rainsford and was ready for whatever came at him next. Rainsford set a few traps but he did not succeed against the sly Zaroff. Zaroff sent his dogs and his buddy Ivan on a hunt for Rainsford and Rainsford ended up killing one of his dogs.
By the end of the hunt, Rainsford, had killed one of the dogs and also killed Zaroff's friend named Ivan. Rainsford made a trap that he learned from when he was in Uganda. The trap had a knife on the end, recoiled, and took Ivan down. Due to Ivan getting hit by the trap, the dogs were on the loose because Ivan let go of the leashes. Rainsford could hear the dogs coming. He kept running until he came to an edge of the cliff and knew he had to jump. Rainsford swam from the jungle to where General Zaroff's house was.
After a long hunting feud between Zaroff and Rainsford, Rainsford came to the house where Zaroff was sitting in the dining room enjoying his meal after a long day of hunting. Zaroff was shocked to see Rainsford come through that door and realized that Rainsford had survived Ivan and the dogs. Zaroff told Rainsford that he had won the game and congratulated him. Rainsford “I am still a beast at bay,” he said, in a low, hoarse voice. “Get ready, General Zaroff.” And that was the end of Zaroff. Rainsford had claimed his victory.
