"...Kicked open the door; they took the door hinges off the hinges... profoundly changed the course of history"(109).
Sign Post #2 (Numbers and Stats)
¨In February 2003, the Triple Nickles were honored with a granite monument placed at the entrance of the Airborne & Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville, North Carolina"(108).
¨The association honors the Triple Nickels by maintaining the battalion´s history and enabling members to keep in touch with one another. The association even has a jump team¨(108).
This is said to show that the whites are finally excepting the blacks into their life and not judging for race.
Word Gap (integrated)
Gavin said yes, and added that, if the 555th were integrated into the 82nd, they would benefit from the "newest equipment and weapons" he knew the 82nd was getting and so would have the oppurtunity"(97).
The reason this number is important is because it was a huge milestone for the blacks, they finally were recognized for what they worked for and all of the hard work they did, just trying to have equal rights.
Summary; Most important thing
In the book Courage Has No Color racism is a big problem, and the black Paratroopers were especially working towards ending racism and all through the book the black Paratroopers hit milestones.
Nickle has a growth mindset because he thought differently about the blacks when the Paratroopers fought for equality, and now he likes the blacks and has a jump team with them.
Book Club Question
Integrated means desegregated especially racially. This is not a technical term
They weren't aloud to practice on the same equipment as the white Paratroopers. They became the first black Paratroopers. Nickle Joe Murchison wouldn't even talk to blacks, and then he wouldnt let them join his jump team. But now he has a team with blacks and whites and says his mind changed.
Why did the black Paratroopers work so hard and fight for a country who won't even let them sit near them or eat at the same place as them?
