  • Thomas Gallaudet & Alice & Mason Cogswell
  • Mason I would like to fund a trip for you to find someway so Alice can communicate.
  • I remember when I was a child I played alone because I was sick but why is she playing alone?
  • Since I can't hear I'll play alone. There's NO way for me to talk to others without hearing them. It's not fair...
  • England (first stop)
  • Alice Cogswell is deaf. I've long and hard to find someway to help her communicate.Do you have any way to help her?
  • I am sorry Mr. Gallaudet I can't tell you, its a secret.
  • Abbe de la Eppe & Abbe Sicard
  • I want to help Deaf children.  I want to open a school for the deaf and teach them French Sign Language.
  • That's a great idea Abbe de la Eppe and I Abbe Sicard will help you.
  • Thomas Gallaudet was born on December 10th 1787 in Philadelphia. He was always sick as a child, he isolated and felt lonely. Alice Cogswell was the daughter of Mason Cogswell, they were close. She was deaf and played alone because she didn't know how to communicate. Mason funded a trip for Thomas to travel to Europe & help her.
  • Jean Massieu & Laurent Clerc
  • (signing) Good job Laurent Clerc. You are my brightest student.
  • (signing) Thank you Mr. Massieu, means a lot.
  • Gallaudet went to England and meet the Braidwood family. When Gallaudet asked the said it was a secret method to teach Deaf children speak/ "hear." Gallaudet became frustrated so he was sent to watch a demonstration in London.
  • Martha's Vineyard
  • Who else is excited for the new school for the Deaf?
  • Abbe de la Eppe was a french priest who grew up w/ 2 Deaf neighbors. He taught them French Sign Language. He then created a school for the deaf and most most Deaf school were created to learn about God and so they could go to heaven. After Abbe dela Eppe's death Abbe Sicard took over.
  • Modern American Sign Language (ASL)
  • We should learn sign language because to communicate with your cousins and lots of people are Deaf so it wouldn't hurt to learn.
  • That's a great a idea it would be awesome to learn ASL.
  • Both Jean Massieu & Laurent Clerc were the 2 brightest students. Massieu is the 1st student then teacher at the school for the Deaf.  Laurent Clerk was one of Massieu's students.
  • Many children went to the school from this area. Martha's Vineyard had a high population of Deaf people. Since they had a high population sign language was used a lot more
  • Me! My family and I have traveled far for me to go to this school.
  • Today sign language is used everyday. Most of American Sign Language is 60% old French and 40% is indigenous signs. By 1869 over 1,500 students graduated from the school of the Deaf and there was more than 30 residential schools in the United States. Today Gallaudet University is open and in business with a statue of him with Alice Cogswell.
