Slave's in Jamestown had to work on tobacco farms. They worked for their food and if they didn't they would not eat.
If you don't work, you shall not eat.
Jamestown was built on a swamp in Virginia. It had lots of mosquito's and, lots of fertile soil and good plantation.
They had to establish the House of Bergesses because King James the first was too far away to make decisions. They chose representatives in Virginia this method spread to other colonies around.
Cheers to the House of Burgesses!!
Jamestown was a huge disaster but, was saved by tobacco. Tobacco saved Jamestown and helped it become the first successful colony in the new world.
Why is it surprising that Jamestown was successful? Because Jamestown was built on a swamp but caused lots of fertile soil. In Jamestown there was also a large spread of disease and a time called the "starving time." Many people died but, after many obstacles Jamestown became a successful colony. Which was very surprising considering all the challenges that were faced.
