In this scene the bear is trying to get the porridge that the family is eating for dinner. Lyddie is taking responsibility in this situation by keeping her family safe. This conflict is man vs nature because Lyddie is going against the bear to keep her family safe. The bear on the other hand just wants the porridge to eat.
In this scene Lyddie is going against her friends because she doesn't want to get in trouble for signing the petition. Her friends want her to sign it because they want more money, and better working conditions. Lyddie already got a raise so she doesn't want anymore change. This is a man vs society conflict because Lyddie is facing a group of people who want change in the working conditions.
In this scene Lyddie is fighting with herself whether or not she should go to the Boston factory, or stay where she is. Triphena says she should go because she will get better pay. This is a self vs self conflict because Lyddie wants to stay so she can stay with her friends, but wants to leave so she can get better pay. She doesn't want to leave Triphena, but wants to pay off the debts from her family as soon as possible.
