Hera decided to give a hero's test to Jason. On his way to his kingdom to reclaim the throne, Jason came across Hera (disguised as an old woman) who asked for help crossing the stream. He had to chose to continue his course and pay her no mind or help the old lady. Jason carried her on his back and crossed the stream with her. Jason continued on his way.
"I've come before you to claim the throne as the rightful king of Iolcus."
Jason finally arrived to Iolcus and found his uncle Pelias still in control while his father was still imprisoned. Pelias told his nephew that the golden fleece was to be his quest. This was a quest that many heroes failed to complete. It was a quest that would make him a hero among men and king among his people. Jason thought it through and agreed to the mission.
"Only if you retrieve the Golden Fleece to me will I give up the throne."
Jason needed a ship for the expedition and also had to gather around 53 heroes to accompany him. The entire group of heros were called the Argonauts. Hera asked Athena, the goddess of crafts, to make sure that Jason’s ship was worthy of the a voyage, and Athena decided to help. Right after the ship was finished, the argonauts set out for Colchis.
Jason’s last task was to overcome the dragon that guarded the Golden Fleece. Jason was ready to go ahead with his sword, but Medea offered a sleeping potion. Jason made the dragon fall asleep, and taking the Golden Fleece was much easier.
Jason returned to Iolcus where he found his father dying. Medea made a potion to help him regain his health for a few more years. Jason was able to reclaim his throne as a hero.
