  • EXPOSITION
  • RISING ACTION
  • CLIMAX
  • At the beginning of Flowers for Algernon, we the readers find out that 38 year old, Charlie Gordon  has a much lower IQ than all the people around him in his life as he goes out and says "I want to be smart" (672). This quote shows the Charlie knows he isn't as smart but knows he can and he wants to be.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • The rising action of Flowers for Algernon really starts at the point when Charlie has the surgery done that will triple his intelligence (677). After this happens, Slowly Charlie's intelligence begins to rise and it is shown in multiple ways. One way is at the end of part 1 when Charlie states, "It's a funny thing I never knew that Joe and Frank and the others liked to have me around all the time to make fun of me," (686). This quote is important in showing Charlie's rising intelligence because for one it points out that he finally realizes that Joe and Frank are making fun of him and you can see that his grammar and spelling has drastically improved.
  • RESOLUTION
  • In the climax of Flowers for Algernon Charlie's intelligence reaches its peak from the surgery. the quote from Ms.Kinnian, "It's true, Charlie. You're already a better reader than I am.You can read a whole page at a glance while I can take in only a few lines at a time." (695), shows that Charlie is at his full potential because he's already smarter than his teacher Ms. Kinnian and even she knows it because she's the one who told this to charlie so she would know first hand. The other part of the climax was when Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur got into an argument over the research and who should take credit for the experiment and how Dr. Nemur was more interested in the Chair of psycology at princeton and how Dr. Strauss is merely an opprotunist. this is important to know because know we know that both of them are only doing this for the fame
  • THEMES
  • The falling action of Flowers for Algernon begins with Charlie getting his own laboratory because he wants to continue the research that the doctors gave up on and because he felt bad for the boy at the resturaunt that was like Charlie and wanted to complete the research, (702). After this Charlie completes the research and according to what Charlie found, "... Artificially increased intelligence deteriorates at a rate of time directly proportional to the quantity of the increase," (705) what this means is that with Charlies 3 times increase of intelligence his intelligence would deteriorate 3 times the normal rate of an average person. along with this algernon dies.
  • Flowers for Algernon ends with Charlie losing all of his intelligence and him being back to his old self except now he knows that people make fun of him instead of being friends with him. However this time around joe stands up for Charlie, (710). This happens when Charlie gets his old job back at the factory and a new worker starts picking on him, "I felt bad but Joe Carp came over and grabbed his shirt and said leave him alone you lousy cracker or Ill break your neck," (710). After this Charlie leaves the area so no one will feel bad for him,(711).
  • the theme for flowers for Algernon is to never change yourself to fit in.
