Janie doesn't mourn for long. She soon meets a travelling worker who calls himself Tea Cake. The two instantly connect with each other, and Tea Cake engages Janie in all sorts of activities. However, the Townspeople distrust Tea Cake and assume that he is looking to steal the money Janie inherited from Joe.
After spending some time together, Janie's fears come true. When she wakes up one night, Tea Cake and her secret stash of money are gone. After some panicking, Tea Cake eventually returns and admits that he got excited by the amount of money and used it to party with other townspeople. He promises to make the money back by gambing, and ends up winning more that what he spent earlier.
Happy with the winnings, Janie forgives Tea Cake for stealing her money. The two then decide to travel down to the Everglades in search of work and adventure. When they reach the everglades, the two meet Mrs. Turner. Mrs. Turner, despite being mixed herself, hates black people. She tries to convince Janie, who is also mixed, that she should marry her educated, "whiter" brother. Janie refuses and the two eventually cut ties with Mrs. Turner, solidifying their relationship.
