One day, Janie finds a revolver hidden under Tea Cake's pillow. She removes three cartridges from the gun, and puts the gun back. Later on, Tea Cake, still driven mad by rabies, grabs the gun in anger and pulls the trigger on Janie. The gun does not fire. Janie dashes for a rifle, and Tea Cake pulls the trigger two more times. As Tea Cake pulls the trigger for the fourth time, Janie shoots and kills Tea Cake with the rifle.
After being found Not Guilty of murder, Janie returns to Eatonville. The townspeople gossip about how Tea Cake stole her money and ran, but in her heart, Janie knows that she finally found true love.
