  • In the early 18th century Maori tribes like the ngati tribes started to migrate into the Hauraki gulf and travel as far north as Mahurangi
  • From 1600-1750 tamaki tribes had settled on volcanic cones because they felt safe and protected. They built their own protection called a pa and grew traditional food.
  • in 1750 more people started to settle on tamaki makaurau. It was populated with tens of thousands of people that lived with their own tribes. Some tribes are ngati whatua, ngati paoa, ngai tai, and more.
  • Europeans started to arrive and the Maori had engaged in trade with them. They traded items and weapons with ponamu which was a valuable resource to the Maori.
  • in 1821 the ngapuhi tribe invaded the villages of the tamaki tribe with 2000 men and 1000 with muskets that the europeans traded them. The ngapuhi tribe had slayed hundreds and also enlaved hundreds more. The ngapuhi tribe had many other invasions aswell.
  • Over the years tribes would fight other tribes to claim land and resources. they would build their own pa's usually up on mountains or close to the ocean and traded lots with the europeans.
