General Santa Anna sent troops to control the rebels, but it only resulted in more conflict. After the Alamo massacre, the Americans managed to capture General Santa Anna and he agreed to remove the troops from Texas.
Texas was independent for ten years. During the presidential campaign of James Polk, he encouraged the manifest destiny, and supported the annexation of Texas.
Many people wanted Texas to remain independent while others wanted Texas to join with the United States, in the end, Texas was annexed and became the 28th state of the U.S.
