The current COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone, including myself. Working from home and being in this lockdown has affected my mental health - as I am sure it does for everyone else.
Sometimes when I sit alone, I reminisce on my life before COVID-19 happened, and how my life was like.
We were able to travel anywhere in the world
I travelled to Jeju Island in South Korea, and the weather was shifting from winter to spring. It was cold during the time and I visited a lot of scenic and breathtaking places that were memorable. I went there with my family so we stayed in a rented home located just beside the sea.
In the mornings, we would have breakfast before making our trip to places we have planned out for that day. For lunch and dinner we would eat local korean food and it was delicious and such a unique experience.
Attending concerts when our favourite artists came
Whenever my favourite band or artist announced they were coming to Malaysia, I would be the first to sit in front of my laptop to purchase tickets, which were selling like hotcakes! And then I would scream happily when I finally manage to get my hands on the tickets. And I countdown the days till the concert date, and I would listen to their album every day.
And when the day finally came, I would wear the outfit I have planned out for months, eat at any of my favourite restaurants and get to the concert early. When they came on stage, I would scream my lungs out and sing-along with them.
Attending our friends' weddings
Every weekend, we would attend weddings of our friends or families. I would take one hour to get myself ready, get my makeup done, and dress nicely and I would go to my friend's wedding. It would be like a mini-reunion, seeing my friends I have known for years, friends I have known from high school or college. We were absolutely happy at the time.
We get to have brunch or dinner with friends
One of the things I always look forward to in the weekend is having brunch or dinner with my friends. Catching up with friends, asking them how their lives are, and get their update on life gives me assurance that people I care for are doing well in life.
How I keep up with my mental health during MCO
Being in MCO for months and having to stay in our homes has affected my mental health. I do whatever I can to cope with my mental health. I would exercise regularly to keep myself healthy, eat my meals on time and get enough sleep so that I can function well the next day.
My friends and I would take pictures with the bride and groom, and as we were getting ready to leave, I would congratulate the newlyweds on their marriage. "Congratulations newlyweds!"
I remembered when we were able to hang-out with our friends, and Malaysia is competing in a big game, like the SEA games or the Olympics, we would gather at our local mamak restaurant and screamed our hearts out when Malaysia wins a game.
I would also make sure that I don't work myself too much, I would order food if I don't feel like cooking and I would take breaks. I read books, stream Netflix, read books, and play with my cats if I ever get tired from doing work. It is important to take care of your mental health during this pandemic so that we would not fall into depression.
