Frederick Douglass was born in Maryland on Colonel Lloyd’s farm in the early 1800’s. Frederick had only seen his mom a few times in his whole life because she lived on a different plantation. Frederick went to work for Mr. and Mrs. Auld in Baltimore. Mrs. Auld was very kind to him and treated him like he was any other person. Because she grew up where slavery was illegal and never saw a slave before. But Mr. Auld seen many slaves before and was rude and nasty to Frederick.
Frederick liked it in Baltimore with the Aulds. Mrs.Auld would invite him to watch her sing. One day, she found out he didn’t know the alphabet or know how to read and decided to teach him the alphabet. He really enjoyed learning and wanted to know more and more about reading.
Everyday Frederick looked forward to learning with Mrs. Auld and would get excited. One day Mrs. Auld was teaching Frederick about reading and Mr. Auld heard her teaching him. Mr. Auld got really mad and yelled “ Slaves aren’t supposed to learn how to read its against the law it will spoil him”. That night Frederick thought about what he said and got sad because he really enjoyed learning.
