  • The French and Indian War
  • Non, nous devons les battre !
  • I told you we would beat you!
  • In spring of 1754, the French built forts from Lake Ontario south to the Ohio River. Then, the British built forts in Pennsylvania. Then the governor sent a militia to drive out the French, led by George Washington. The French won and kept some of the soldiers and later released them.
  • Quebec - Canada
  • The French and the British both wanted Native American help. The French already had and advantage because they had many native american allies. Also the british tried to make a treaty with the Iroquois. At the time the confederacy consisted of six nations, the mohawk, seneca, cayuga, onondaga, oneida, and tuscarora. Representives from seven colonies met with Iroquois and Albany, in June 1754. They refuse an alliance, they remained neutral. The Albany delegates also talked about about how the colonies might work together more closely against the French. Each colony would give up some of its powers. No one wanted to work together. Then the conflict turned into a full scale war.
  • The Treaty of Paris
  • The French were beating the British in the early years of the war, but there was a turning point in 1757 when William Pitt became Prime Minister of England. He sent more trained British troops. Pitt also wanted to conquer French Canada. The British won a key victory at For Louisbourg. The same year a British force captured Fort Frontenac, another Fort Duquesne. Then they renamed it Ford Pitt.
  • New British Policies
  • The capital of New France, Quebec was on a cliff. It was thought to be impossible to attack. In September 1759, the British found a poorly guarded path and in the night they overwhelmed the French Guards and went up the path. Then the British defeated the French Army on the Plains of Abraham. The fall of Quebec and Montreal marked the defeat of France.
  • The war ended with the Treaty of Paris of 1763. It forced France to give Canada and most of its land to Great Britain. Britain also got Florida from Frances ally, Spain. This treaty marked the end of France as a power. Now North America was in the hands of two European powers, Great Britain and Spain.
  • The natives in Ohio River Valley had lost their trading partners and now had to deal with the British. The British raised the prices of their goods. The British also refused to pay the natives for using their land and more colonists started settling there. Pontiac, the chief of and Ottawa saw this as a threat, King George also told colonists to settle west of the Appalachian Mts. This war and the other left Britain in debt.
