  • Text Structure-Compare and Contrast
  • parenthetical: " When the whistle blows at 3 o'clock in the morning, he pulls on his clothes and hurries to the shrimp and oyster cannery where he spends the day peeling the shells off iced shrimp" (1).
  • Paraphrased: I think that it' crazy that little 4 and 5 year old boys would be put in this much pain as to wake up early every morning and then go to a factory and work for people. Especially making very little money. You would except boys to be doing some house chores and being able to relax but not have their lives be this extreme.

  • Headline- Kids Are Forced To Work
  • It's crazy that little boys work this much every day all week. " Many of them worked twelve hours or more a day, six days a week, for pitiful wages under unhealthy and hazardous conditions" (2).  The author used these numbers and stats to show how hard kids were being treated during this time.
  • Question for bookclub
  • Hoping that his family would be ok, he had to work even harder to make sure that they would be able to make enough money so they could thrive.
  • Theme: Pushing through challenges to get to success even if it means failing on the way.  5 topics: determination, diligent, caring, thoughtful, earning.
  • SWBS Summary- Lewis Wickes Hine wanted to stop child labor and make sure kids were treated right. So  he quit his teaching job and became a investigative photographer for The National Child Labor Committee. So that he could take pictures of kids who were forced to work in factories and other jobs. But sometimes when he would want to talk pictures he could't because the owners of the factories didn't like be exposed so he had to sneak it a lot.
  • How would you improve Child labor so that the kids don't have to wake up so early and they don't have to do these super tough jobs so young?
