“When the night rains soaks the ground past the soaking point, when the earthen walls around the paddy melt away, when the rice plants are sucked out the earth one by one and washed down the slope” (Pg.33)
For days and days, rain poured heavy unto Lakshmi's (the girl in the field) family's crops. Which is what they have been praying for but, in this case there was too much.
Initial Dialogue or Event
This excessive rain soaked the ground. Crops and such got sucked out of the earth and displaced away from the cropland. Lakshmi's family made money off of these crops meaning, there was no way they were going to be able to make money with all of them gone and destroyed.

This problem led to the conclusion that Lakshmi should work as a maid for an old lady away from home in a city, but this was a lie told to her to make her go. She would actually work for an old lady to take care of men’s ‘needs’, to lock herself in a room with any man willing to pay and let him do whatever they wanted to her.
Now that Lakshmi (girl in the picture) is at the house of her new job, she has discovered it for what it truly is. She needs to get out now. Living in the house unwillingly she discovers more and more challenges in leaving and staying in this house. She can't find a way out. but one American Customer gave a white card saying he could save her from this.
While working at Lakshmi's new job she befriended a boy who sold tea and treats to all the girls in the house. This boy knew connections. But his time he was spending at this house Lakshmi stayed in was coming to an end. He was moving unto another house. Lakshmi sees this as her chance to escape. While saying goodbye the boy she slips the card into the boy's pocket in hopes he would help her.
Because Lakshmi slipped the white card to the tea boy, he knew who to find to help these helpless girls. The boy straight away ran to the American man to share the news. Now that the American man knew for sure he and his grew came demanding that the owner set these girls free from their debt and that the one who started all this (Old, angry lady) will be sent to jail.
