Hello there children! I'm here to assist you in solving two-step equations. Let's begin!
This is the equation we will be trying to solve. It may seem hard, but it's not.
-5x-12=23 now becomes -5x+(-12)=23
The first step is rather easy, we use RAE to change subtraction to addition.
-5x+(-12)=23 -(-12) -(-12) -5x=35
Next we use the inverse operation of addition (Subtraction) to isolate the variable. (Make it stand on its own) And finally, we use the equality property of subtraction, meaning we do the same thing on the other side.
-5x=35 /-5 /-5 x= -7
As our last step, we again use the inverse operation, but this time of multiplication since -5x is the same as (-5) * x. (We use division) We again have to use the equality property, but of division. So we divide -5 from each side to get our isolated x, and our solution. (What x equals)
And our solution is -7. YAY!! You've done it!
