Bacon and his band of rebels marched into Jamestown by force. Berkely was able to make an escape by ship but Jamestown was burned to the ground.
That Captain is a liar
Get back to work!!
Later Captain Thomas Grantham lead a retaliation at the rebel fortification on an Island in the York River. Thomas Grantham is quoted saying that he encountered, "some 400 English and Negroes in Armes."
MOVE IT SLAVES!
To get the rebels to stop, Captain Grantham made the "promise" that they all had been pardoned and freed from their slavery if they stopped fighting. Most of the rebels then agreed to stop, which left only 80 black and 20 white rebels to not surrender.
With the Captains promise and most of the men surrendering, it was impossible for the rebels to stand a chance. They eventually lost and all of the slaves and servants were returned to their masters. Captain Grantham did not keep his promise.
After Bacon's rebellion this lead to a change in social order. Society realized by buying and importing more slaves, this would reduce the dependency on armed white labor forces. Slaves from Africa was now the primary source of labor.
