  • Manifest Destiny
  • California Gold Rush and Statehood
  • Popular Sovereignty
  • The idea of Manifest Destiny led to Americans moving west in order to spread their democratic ideas to the rest of the continent. This led to the addition of new states to the country, which upset the balance between free and slave states.
  • Bloody Kansas
  • The California Gold Rush caused a large amount of people to move to California in search of riches. Soon, California wanted to become a state, but it upset the balance between free and slave states, which had remained equal until then.
  • Election of 1860
  • Popular Sovereignty allowed states to vote on whether they will be slave states or free states. This continued to skew the senate in favor of free state senators.
  • The debate in Kansas with people moving to Kansas to just to vote whether or not Kansas would be a slave state, turned violent and caused people to start killing each other over their opinions.
  • The Election of Abraham Lincoln, a republican, free-soiler, caused tensions to rise between the North and South, because the South thought that their right to own slaves was in jeopardy.
