Storyboard Text

  • To start off this presentation, I'd like to first explain the First Law of Thermodynamics .
  • The First Law of Thermodynamics states that energy cannot be created nor destroyed.
  • Thermodynamics
  • Thermodynamics
  • I remember this from my class.
  • Thermodynamics
  • I thought heat engines operate according to the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
  • Thermodynamics
  • An example of of the First law of thermodynamics would be a Heat engine.
  • Heat engines are systems that convert heat  or thermal energy into mechanical energy that is capable of doing mechanical work.
  • Thermodynamics
  • Thermodynamics
  • You are not wrong. Heat engines operate according to both the first and second laws of thermodynamics.
  • The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that the entropy of an isolated system always increases. Entropy being the degree of disorder and randomness in a system striving to reach thermal equilibrium.
  • Thermodynamics
  • Thermodynamics
  • So what does this mean?
  • Thermodynamics
  • It means that the first law is the implementation of conservation of energy, and the second law limits the efficiency and direction of energy flow in a system.
  • Alright, thats all I got for you today. Thank you for your time.
