  • Noooooo don't leave Candide.
  • Why do bad things happen to good people? Should I listen to Pangloss' philosophy?
  • I can't believe I just got kicked out of the castle.
  • We need more recruits for the army lets hep this man out and conscript him into the army.
  • I need food and money. What am i gonna do now that I've been kicked out of the castle?
  • This place is weird. You have to ask to go take a walk? I've gotten get out of here and back to Cunegonde.
  • He is a deserter!!!
  • I was just  taking a walk?
  • Let him go!!!
  • In the first Chapter of Candide , Candide is kicked out of the castle for kissing the baron's daughter (Cunegonde). Pangloss (Candide's teacher is helping him learn optimism and that we live in the best of all possible worlds. Cungeonde sees Pangloss teaching about "experimental physics she immediately finds Candide flirts with him and kisses him. Because of this happening Candide is kicked out of the castle.(Things are not looking good for Candide and he beings to believe that optimism is useless.)
  • Man is what he saying true? Should I believe Martin or Pangloss' teachings?
  • There is some good in the world.
  • There is no good in there world...How could you say that?
  • After being kicked out of the castle Candide wanders around and meets soldiers from the Bulgar Army  who take him in feed him and give him money. Candide is then conscripted  into the Bulgar army were he is indoctrinated into the military life. (Things are going good for Candide and he believes in Pangloss' teaching of optimism.)
  • How was the world created?
  • Wow Martin is very pesstimistic!
  • To make us all mad!
  • I told Candide that the world is full of greater evil. He should have listened to me , now we have no money.
  • One day Candide decides to go for a walk when he is captured and in trouble for being a "deserter". Candide is to be punished and given 2 options , either to be whipped or killed. Candide tries to explain to them that humans have the right of freedom to go as they please but they do not care. The king of Bulgars passes by and sees Candide and believes that he is ignorant and pardons him. Candide gets healed up in time to fight in the Bulgar and Abares war. (Candide is not so optimistic at this point.)
  • Is there an hope for optimism in this terrible world?
  • Oh no! I just lost all my money.
  • I'm about to take all this money from these strangers!
  • These strangers are about to lose, especially because we are cheating!
  • In this scene we meet Martin. Martin is basically the polar opposite of Pangloss' teachings , he is pessimistic and  believes that God abandoned the world and it is suffering from a greater evil. Everything optimistic Candide says bothers him.
  • Along this journey with Martin , Candide tries to understand his philosophy of pessimism . Candide asks Martin why he thinks the world was created? Martin then answers Candide by saying how the world was created "To make us mad". Furthermore Candide ask Martin if he believes that men do evil things to each other? Where then Martin answers Candide by saying "have hawks always eaten piegons?" answering his question using a metaphor. Candide disagrees with Martin's answer and explains to him that men have free will and not all are bad.
  • For the rest of the journey Candide begins to find optimism useless because of how  accurate Martin's philosophy has been. Martin and Candide arrive to France and the minute they get there, everything beginnings to go down hill. First Martin and Candide meet 2 physicians ,an abbe Perigold and play cards and end up losing a great deal of money. From then on everything falls apart , showing Candide that optimism is something he should not believe in.
