  • Heme is the type of iron that comes from meat, poultry, and seafood. Eating things like chicken, turkey, salmon, etc. will give your body heme iron.  
  • Non Heme
  • Heme iron is more easily absorbed than non heme is. Heme iron helps to make red blood cells and keep hemoglobin regulated. 
  • Non Heme
  • Heme iron is good for the body to have, but has been known to increase the chances of cancer, heart disease, and stroke. 
  • Which is better?
  • Non heme iron comes from plant based foods. It is absorbed slower than heme iron which allows you to have more of it. You can get non heme iron from grains, beans, fruits, vegetables, and more. 
  • Non heme iron helps with production of blood and has a greater impact on overall health factor. 
  • Overall, non heme and heme are both equally good and bad. Too much of either one can be bad for your body.
