Rainsford and Whitney are on the boat talking about an island. "Off there to the right-somewhere-is a large island...it's rather a mystery...the old charts call it Ship Trap Island" (Conell 60).
Rainsford is shouting for someone to hear him when he falls off the boat. " He struggled up to the surface and tried to cry out" (Conell 63).
The inciting incident occurs when Rainsford arrives to the island after desperately swimming to the gun shots he heard and falls into a deep sleep. " He flung himself down at the jungle edge and tumbled head long into the deepest sleep of his life" (Conell 63).
The Climax occurs when Rainsford is cornered at the island and Zaroff's dogs are soon to arrive. He has no other choice but to jump into the sea." Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leaped far out into the sea..." (Conell 80).
Rainsford arrives to Zaroff's bedroom as zaroff was preparing for sleep. The two men talk and then duel and it suggests Rainsford kills Zaroff. " I congratulate you... you have won the game... On gaurd, Rainsford..." (Conell 80).
In the end Rainsford sleeps the best he has ever slept. "He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided" (Conell 80).
