During the European Exploration, the people of Europe wanted to find rare spices, spread christianity, and discover new lands and people. New advancements in technology such as The Astrolabe, Lateen Sails, The Magnetic Compass, cartography, and shipbuilding also sparked their interest in traveling. The mother countries, France, Spain, and Great Britian, used mercantilism to get natural resources. The countries would send manufacturers to Africa to get slaves and to America. They would take slaves from Africa to America and then take the raw materials from the colonies of North and South America back to Europe. During this trade process, new lands were also discovered.
During the Enlightenment period, John Locke had his opinion on men. He believed that man were good at heart. On the other hand Thomas Hobbe has his opinion on man. He believed that men were selfish creatures. These two people along with Baron de Montesquieu, Jean Jacques Rousseau, and Voltaire had a great impact on society today. They were the building blocks of creating a democracy. Montesquieu believed in separation of powers where no one branch had all power. Rosseau believed in where everybody voted to express the general will and the laws of the land. Voltaire believed in the freedom of speech and religion.
