Storyboard Text

  • Protagonist 1: Libby Strout
  • Protagonist 2: Jack Masselin
  • Theme
  • Libby is very determined and she knows exactly what she wants. Despite her title as "Americas Fattest teen", she is very confident already, making her a static character. Libby is a well-rounded character, also.
  • Imagery
  • Jack is the most popular boy at MVBHS. He suffers from what he calls "Face-Blindness" and hides is from everyone. Jack changes a lot and becomes more open to others, making him a dynamic character. As the book progresses, he becomes a very round character.
  • Symbolism
  • The theme of this book is to get to know people for who they actually are, and not judge for what they look like. If Jack hadn't gotten to know Libby, he would have never fallen in love with her and just thought of her as "Americas Fattest Teen".
  • Irony
  • Jack can't recognize faces, so he has to remember characteristics. On his ex-girlfriend, it's "...the mole she paints by her right eyebrow, even though everyone knows it's not real."(33). His description gives imagery, even though he can't see the faces.
  • Libby has multiple copies of her favorite book, We've Always Lived in the Castle. For Jacks birthday, she gave him one of the copies. They both saw it as a symbol of Libby herself and her commitment to jack. "...but the girl, Mary Kathrine... she reminds me of, uh, me I guess..." (209)
  • As "Americans Fattest Teen" and the most popular guy at MVBHS, Libby and Jack are a very odd match. JAck grabbed Libby as a part of his friends "Fat Girl Rodeo" and in return, Libby punched him. The pair was bizzare, yet they fell in love after hating eachother. "Its kind of crazy. I mean, you." (389)
