  • "When i was a young girl in china, my grandmother told me my mother was a ghost. This did not mean she was dead. In those days, a ghost was anything we were forbidden to talk about."
  • "My mother took her flesh and put it in the soup. She cooked magic in the ancient tradition to try to cure her mother this one last time. She opened Popo’s mouth, already too tight from trying to keep her spirit in. She fed her this soup, but that night Popo flew away with her illness. Even though I was young, I could see the pain of the flesh and the worth of the pain."
  • "I watched my mother, seeing her for the first time, this pretty woman with her white skin and oval face, not too round like Auntie’s or sharp like Popo’s... As she peered into Popo’s eyes, she clucked soft worried sounds. I watched her carefully, yet it was her voice that confused me, a familiar sound from a forgotten dream."
  • "ma" I had cried, rushing off my chair, but my auntie slapped my face and pushed me back down...Still my mother shouted at me to come. i remember her voice so clearly now. An-mei! An-mei! i could see my mother"s face across the table. between us stood the soup pot on its heavy chimney-pot stand rocking slowly, back and forth. And then with one shout this dark boiling soup spilled forward and fell over my neck.
  • An-mei!
  • In the first box I decided to chose that quote because I find it sad how her grandmother tells her that her mother is a ghost. The grandmother does not want her or anyone to talk about the mother. The grandmother wanted her to forget about her mother. In the second box I decided to pick this quote because the mother came back just to help the grandmother get better. She put her own flesh into the soup, even though the grandmother kicked her out she still wants to help her mother get better. I would do the same for my mother because i would do everything i can to help her recover and get better.
  • In the third box she watched her mother carefully, she didn't really know if that was her mother but deep down inside she knew.Even though her mother was gone her whole life, the mother-daughter connection has not gone away. I decided to pick this quote because it reminds me of how close I am with my mother. Me and my mother are inseparable. In the fourth box I decided to pick this quote because this was one of the most important quotes in the chapter. This explains when her and her mother were separated because the family was kicking the mother out. I felt that i could relate to this because when I was 2 years old, my dad and I were separated and still are till this day. I find it really sad how children and their parents are separated and some never find their way back to each other.
