Once upon a time, there was a little match girl. She lived in Denmark where it was very cold. She sold matches to make money.
One cold day, the little match girl did not sell any. She did not go home; she was afraid to face her step-father.
Instead, she found a corner out of the way. She was so cold that she lit a match to keep warm. She saw an image of a stove on the wall.
The match went out. She lit another match and saw a feast. This match went out too.
She lit another match and saw her grandmother, the only person who had shown her kindness. To keep the image of her grandmother in view, she kept lighting her matches until they were all gone.
The young girl died on the street in the cold. Her grandmother took her soul to Heaven, and the townspeople found her body the next day.
