Mom, Dad, will you tell us about your family? In school, they were talking about the genocide in Cambodia; we remembered that you are from there.
During the Vietnam War, the U.S. were in Cambodia, that's in S.E. Asia. They were using our country as a base for their troops. Well, many of our people were killed. Our people were upset with the U.S., they found hope in the communistic party, Khmer Rouge (worldwithoutgenocide.org).
The Disturbing Results
The Khmer Rouge immediately tried to force the country in a Communistic Agrarian utopia. Doctors, teachers, the rich, anyone who didn't cooperate fully with the plan were taken to fields and killed and thrown into mass graves (endgenocide.org).
Attempts to Make Wrongs Right!
Your grandmother kept me safe. She had heard about a wealthy family not far from us that were killed because they refused to give up their land. They wanted everyone to give up their homes and property to live in communal living, farming the land. She went along with them just to keep us safe. Luckily that was right before Vietnam invaded and stopped the Khmer Rouge.
From 1975-1979, about 2 million Cambodians were killed. Figures that our troubles seem to have started with Vietnam and them began to improve because of them again (worldwithoutgenocide.org).
Many of the killing fields have been dug up and the bodies given proper burial. Sadly, many of the killing fields can not be dug up due to existing landmines that continue to pose a threat (endgenocide.org).
