Salva and his classmates are sitting in their classroom. Salva isn't really paying attention to the teacher, instead, his mind is elsewhere.
Would you like some peanuts?
Salva, his classmates, and his teacher hear gunshots outside of their school. The teacher tells them to run into the forest and not go home. The gunshots are from the war between the rebels and the government.
After Salva regrouped with his people and was forced to join the women and children, his group stays in a barn for the night. When Salva wakes up, he finds that his group woke up and left him to continue their journey. Salva decided to go on his own, and try to find some new people.
While Salva is walking all alone, he sees a house in the distance with an elderly woman sitting outside. He decides to approach the home, and the old woman greets him with much kindness and gratitude. She shares some food with him, and he accepts it with great pleasure. After this, he stays with her for many days. After a few days, the old woman says that Salva can no longer stay with her, as she is fleeing from the war and doesn't want Salva to get hurt.
After the elderly woman tells Salva he can not stay with her, he finds a group of people that not-so-kindly accept him into the group. They walk for miles every day, and rest very little. One day, while in the group, Salva finds his uncle! Salva is very excited about finding him, and he is able to enjoy the journey. His uncle shares food, water, and love. After a long journey, they end up in a rain forest and find a stork to eat. When they begin cooking the stork, three men come up, steal their food and clothes, and kill Salva's uncle.
While at the refugee camp, Salva the other inhabitants of the camp are attacked and chased off by rebel soldiers from the war. They all try to escape to make sure they don’t get attacked, or worse; killed.
