Johnny helps Ponyboy grow stonger and not to be a baby. He shows him this by being tough to the socs and not backing down or acting scared of them. Ponyboy thinks that Johnny is shy and doesn't want to do anything to get him in trouble, and once Johnny killed Bob everything went wrong for him. Johnny makes things harder because once he kills Bob they have to avoid the police and avoid the socs and Ponyboy can't focus on anything but running away. Ponyboy is fending for himself.
The fountain forms Ponyboy because it was were some of the fights were against the socs. It also makes him sad because he fights the socs and he also has to watch the greasers fight the socs and everyone getting injured. His close greaser friend Johnny kills a soc named Bob here . Ponyboy learns that one mistake can impact your life greatly.
Dally is one of many Ponyboy's greaser friends. Dally gives help to Johhny and Ponyboy when they are running, and gives them food. Dally also gives Ponyboy advice so he doesn't get into trouble with the police. When Dally commits suicide/gets shot by the police it greatly impacts Ponyboy because dally gave Ponyboy lots of helpful life advice. Dally wanted to die because he was depressed because Johhny died and took depression to the next level in a bad way. Ponyboy learns that if you feel sad about something, talk to someone.
