  • Sofka had recently divorced her first husband. The first letter introduces her and how much Death has affected her life. it also introduces the recent tragedy of the death of her second husband. She expresses sadness in everything that is going on and how her life hasn't been all that great so far.
  • Falling Action
  • Throughout the first letter, she explains how many times she has seen Death. She shows that Grey (her deceased husband) had died early in the morning. She says she wishes that no one would ever have to meet him. But at the same time, she can understand why he takes people away.
  • Resolution
  • The Death exert talks about how the Germans are starting to further examine passports. This is bad as Sofka smuggles Jews across the border. It is also introduces that there will be a Jewish baby coming into her life soon. Sofka expresses how she feels so bad for the Jews and she wishes she could have given them more time with their families before they were taken.
  • Theme
  • In the letter to Time, she expresses that she misses Time. She also wishes that she would use her time wiser. She never wanted the Jews to be caught, or in the situation at all. Sofka had wished she could help more. But unfortunately, that wasn't possible. Day by day, it was getting worse.
  • Sofka shows that she has come to peace with the death of Grey and that she is willing to move on. She talks to Love, saying that she doesn't blame Love anymore. She is okay with what had happened, and Sofka knows that this was a test of her strength. She also knows that she has done what she could to help the Jewish people, and that in itself is amazing.
