When Jonas gets home, he asks his parents if they love him. They laugh at the question and talk to him about using such a term. They tell him that they are very proud of him and are proud of his accomplishments, but they can't say they love him.
The Giver was giving Jonas wonderful memories, like, birthday parties, horse back riding, and paintings in museums.
Jonas asks the Giver to describe his favorite memory. Afterwards, the Giver transmits the memory of a group of people sitting together under a tree covered with lights. The memory is of family and love.
There were old people and young people under the tree. Jonas asked who were the old people, and The giver replied, "those are called grandparents". Jonas was SHOCKED, because he didn't what were grandparents.
Jonas gives Gabriel another memory to help him sleep and tells Gabriel that he wishes to change the community to make it have love and grandparents.
The next morning, Jonas decided to stop taking pills for his stirring.
