In the mid 1900's, after school Morrison has a job. She cleans her boss' house for two dollars. "I knew how to scrub floors on my knees and how to wash clothes in our zinc tub, but I had never seen a Hoover vacuum cleaner or an iron that wasn’t heated by fire." (2)
Things started to get harder at Morrison's job. Her boss began to give her more to do."I wanted to refuse, or at least to complain, but I was afraid She would fire me, and I would lose the freedom the dollar gave me, as well as the standing I had at home— although both were slowly being eroded." (5)
After feeling discouraged, Morrison talked to her father about how fatigue her job was. Her father gave her words of encouragement that made her realize her worth. "I've had many kinds of jobs, but since that conversation with my father I have never considered the level of labor to be the measure of myself, and I have never placed the security of a job above the value of home." (8)
As a freshman, Adkison was working at Pizza Hut. At first, his experience wasn't the best. His job was overwhelming and exhausting. "I couldn't keep up, and stacks of dishes formed on all sides of me. Every time I made a dent in the pile, the call came back for help clearing tables out front, and I returned with brown tubs full of more dirty dishes." (5)
Eventually, Adkison's view of his job got better. He had moved on to making pizzas. He looked at his job differently. "Pizza Hut became not only my escape from home but also, in many ways, an alternate home." (12) Adkison also stated, "our staff was like a second family." (14)
Jeff and Adkison's bond got better as time progressed. Jeff helped Adkison with college and even took him on a trip. His boss had became the father figure Adkison never had. "Out of all the lessons I learned from the guy in the Pizza Hut tie, maybe the biggest is that any job can be the best job if you have the right boss." (23)
