In Chapter 8, Cassie is being extremely nice to Lillian Jean and even offers to hold Lillian's books for her. Cassie acts like her personal servant and finds out a lot of gossip from this. Finally one day after school when they are walking home Cassie lures her into the woods where she throws Lillian's books to the ground. Then she hits Lillian and pulls her hair, she is smart enough to not leave any marks so Lillian won't have proof Cassie did anything. Cassie says if Lillian tells anyone that Cassie hit her, then Cassie will tell everyone all of Lillian's gossip.
In Chapter 9, TJ has found new friends. He has been hanging out with R.W and Melvin Simms, Jeremy's older brothers. Jeremey says that the brothers talk behind Tj's back when he's not there and don't treat him well. The brothers are a terrible influence and always get in trouble. They are only friends with Tj to get a good laugh out of him. TJ however is clueless and isn't aware of this.
The Logan's are in debt and need to pay a lot of mortgage, but Papa can't go work because he has a broken foot. Mama suggests to ask Uncle Hammer, but Papa feels it's not a good idea because of his short temper. Papa feels Uncle Hammer will get mad when he finds out that Papa broke his leg while he was at Vicksburg, and that Uncle Hammer will wanna beat the person who did it up. The Logan's feel like they are screwed and need help.
