- It's a sunny day in Mexico. Esperanza and he father are laying on the ground. He told her that if she puts her ear to the ground she can hear the earths heart beating. Esperanza lays her head down and says that she doesn't hear it. He says you have to be patient and wait. Then she hears after waiting a while.
- It's eight years later in Mexico. Esperanza is turning 13 in two days. Tonight is fiesta and everyone will celebrate with dances,music, and food.For the first time Esperanza picks a grape from the vineyard normally the servants pick them.
- It is late at night but Esperanza's father is not home. She asked her where he is but she said hes just a little late. Her mother is also worried but she doesn't want to look that way in front of Esperanza. Then Ramona
