Exposition In a simple explanation, the main characters of this story are college students Afia and Shahid, both in which are from Nasirabad, and are highly religious Pashtuns (Iranic people generally from Pakistan and Afghanistan). Afia and Shahid are middle children of a large Pashtun family that consists of their mother, Farishta, their father, Tofan, the stepson, Khalid, and younger brothers and sisters. Although in America, where Shahid's squash team is-- the coach being Lissy and one of her top players being Gus-- Afia's college also sits.
Rising Action Over time, Afia finds herself quickly growing on one of Shahid's teammates, Gus. Although it is against her religion to do such things due to their belief of arranged marriage, she allows herself to fall in love with Gus and tries to keep it on the low-- until a picture on her college's website circulates through and finds it's way to Shahid.
