So what? They're just trees!
Hey! You should stop wasting so much paper! You're wasting trees!
Just trees!? Deforestation, the act of cutting down a large amount of trees, has MANY negative effects!
4/5 of all land animals live in forests. When so many trees are cut down, those animals are left without a habitat. Many of these animals will die without their homes in the forest.
Oh no, a few animals die. It's not like that happens every single day.
If all you care about is humans, how about this effect. Soil erosion occurs in deforested areas because there are no trees to keep the soil in place. This soil can travel into bodies of water and pollute drinking water with silt. Humans can become sick when they drink the water with silt in it.
Oh...Well..Uh...That's too bad, I guess.
Deforestation also has a big impact on climate change. Trees absorbs the greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. Trees also block the sun from heating up the forest floor. Without forests, our Earth could become too hot to be habitable very quickly.
Oh, I guess I didn't realize how many terrible things are caused by deforestation.
I'll think twice before I waste paper or any other product made from trees ever again.
