Scout, you don't know what Boo could've done to it
The children go home, wondering who put the gum in the tree. Over the next few days, various objects appear, the origins of them still unknown. They ask Atticus about some of the objects, seeing if they were worth anything
But, when they went back a few days later, the hole in the tree was filled.
But.. But the tree..!
Don't go cryin', now, Scout
Scout sits in school, waiting for the day to be over
Scout and Jem begin the walk home, running into Mr. Radley
I did, it was dying. Helps keep it alive longer, eh. Figured you'd know that..
Hello, Mr. Radley, you didn't happen to fill the knot hole with cement, did you?
The children rush home to get a second opinion about the tree from Atticus
no, in fact, it looks healthy. Why were you bothering Mr. Radley?
Atticus, is that tree dyin? Mr. Radley says so, but we think that it ain't.
