  • Mrs. Mallard is sick and suffers from a weak heart. Her sister Josephine, comforts her, and gently informs her about her husband's death.

  • The conflict is that Louise feels happy and relieved that her husband is dead, but her excitement and joy is dampened by her sense of obligation to feel sad, mournful, and miserable because her husband is dead.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • Richards, the friend of Louise's husband, saw Louise's husband's name, Brently, on the list of those killed in a railroad accident.
  • RESOLUTION
  • Although grieving, Louise realizes that she is now free from a marriage that oppressed her, even if their marriage wasn't bad and her husband was kind.
  • After Mrs. Mallard comes to the conclusion that she is now free to live a happy life, Josephine and her walk down, just as Mr. Mallard, unharmed by the tragic accident, comes through the door.
  • Mrs. Mallard collapses, unresponsive. The Doctor said that she had passed away of a heart disease - of joy that kills. He thought she was so overjoyed to see him that she died. In reality, she realized her freedom was never to be, and that killed her.
