Welcome to Saint Louis University! I am your English teacher, Ms. Viernes.
Join me inside as I conduct a parent-teacher conference on a report card-giving day!
Good morning, Mrs. Lee! I'm so happy you could come today! Please have a seat.

Thank you!

Francis is a lovely child. He works very hard, and I'm happy to show you how he has improved in writing. Here are his records and report card.
I am glad to hear that!
The school year is well established, and things are running more or less as we expected. Just when everything is settled, it arrives. Yes, it's Parent-Teacher Conference Time!

But I have noticed that his grade in English is lower than the other subjects.
Indeed. Hmm... Francis has earned a B in reading. He reads well orally, but he is having trouble remembering what he read. Also, his spelling grade is a C because he averaged a 74 on his tests.
When Mrs. Lee came in, Ms. Viernes set the right tone by mentioning how happy she is to be seeing her. She smiles warmly and offers Mrs. Lee a seat.
CLASSROOM
Oh, I see. So what do you suggest, ma'am?
I recommend you help him by having him read a paragraph aloud to you and then ask him a question about what he read. If he hesitates, have him re-read the section silently, looking for the answer. Remind him that the answer is in the paragraph.
To break the ice, Ms. Viernes shares a positive anecdote about Mrs. Lee's child. She shares the positive things about Francis that she has observed so far, either academically or socially.

I'm glad to hear that! Thank you again for coming. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me at my email. You have a lovely child! Enjoy the rest of your day!
Thank you, ma'am! Sorry, but I have to go. I'll make sure to work with Francis and share with you what we do.
Ms. Viernes shares areas where Francis can improve or is struggling as she remembers that parents are not credentialed teachers; they often don't know the academic language that comes so naturally to teachers. As she shares challenges that Francis is having, she explains the skill and gives examples.
Then, she makes sure that Mrs. Lee is informed about how to help her child at home. She gives her some homework and includes her in the process of achieving a better goal.
Mrs. Lee and Ms. Viernes end the meeting with an exchange of gratitude. Afterward, Ms. Viernes adds how Mrs. Lee can get in touch with her after the conference and expresses positivity for Francis.
