In act 4 of The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Herrick is moving Tituba and Sarah Good from there cell so the officials may have a meeting to discuss the trials.
Act 4- talking Elizabeth, Hale
Danforth: Will you plead for his confession, or will you not!Elizabeth: I promise nothing. Let me speak with him.Hale: Pray, leave them, Excellency.
Reverend Parris tells Danforth that Abigail and Mary Lewis stole his entire life savings, and Danforth doesn't take any care in trying to help him.
Act 4- talking Proctor, Elizabeth, Hathorne
Hathorne: What say you, Proctor? The sun is soon up.Elizabeth: Do what you will.Proctor: I want my life. I will have my lie.
Reverend Paris is talking to Danforth about him hanging to many people, especially well respected people. He is afraid a rebellion is going to occur, so he asks Danforth to postpone the hangings. Danforth says no because then it would make him look bad.
Proctor: I have signed it, now get rid of itDanforth: NO! We shall post this on the doors.Proctor: NO! I have signed it and god has seen it.Hale: Just accept the confession Danforth.Danforth: If it is a lie, then I will not except it.Proctor: I only have one name and I will not let it be destroyed. (Grabs confession and tears it up.)Danforth: YOU WILL HANG!
Hale and Danforth head to Elizabeth's cell to talk to her about getting a confession from her husband John Proctor,
Elizabeth tells proctor to do what he wants at his own risk. Proctor says that he wants his life and confesses to being a witch.
Danforth makes Proctor sign his name on the confession so he can hang it up for everyone to see. Proctor tries to reason with him, but Danforth won't except the offer. Hale tries to help Proctor but it doesn't work. Proctor doesn't feel right in confessing anymore and rips the confession. He will be hanged for his sin.
