  • Father Georgy Gapon set up a legal trade union in St Petersburg. This was called the Assembly of Russian Factory and Mill workers.
  • 4 members of the workers union at the Putilov Iron Works Plant in St Petersburg were fired.Over 100 thousand workers went on a strike throughout the city.
  • Father Gapon organised a petition complaining aboutworking conditions in the city and calling for change. It was signed by over 150 thousand people.
  • Father Gapon led a march to the Winter Palace to deliver a petition to the Tsar.Thousands of workers took part inthis peaceful protest. The workerswere not trying to overthrow the Tsar.
  • This demonstration of factoryworkers was brutally put down by Russian soldiers.Up to 200 people were killed by rifle fire and Cossack charges and another 800 people wounded.
  • This event became known asBloody Sunday and is seen asone of the key causes of the1905 Revolution.
