Father Georgy Gapon set up a legal trade union in St Petersburg. This was called the Assembly of Russian Factory and Mill workers.
4 members of the workers union at the Putilov Iron Works Plant in St Petersburg were fired.Over 100 thousand workers went on a strike throughout the city.
Father Gapon organised a petition complaining aboutworking conditions in the city and calling for change. It was signed by over 150 thousand people.
Father Gapon led a march to the Winter Palace to deliver a petition to the Tsar.Thousands of workers took part inthis peaceful protest. The workerswere not trying to overthrow the Tsar.
This demonstration of factoryworkers was brutally put down by Russian soldiers.Up to 200 people were killed by rifle fire and Cossack charges and another 800 people wounded.
This event became known asBloody Sunday and is seen asone of the key causes of the1905 Revolution.
