The National assembly has just completed the constitution and has created the legislative assembly. This constitution created a limited constitutional monarchy. Although the King approved of this constitution, he lost lot of power as a result of it. The legislative assembly had the power to create laws and to approve or reject declarations of war.
The guillotine was a lethal device that was used to behead people as a punishment. Because of the many massacres the Jacobins rose to power. People who continued to support the King were put to death and now that the National Convention was guided by radical Jacobins they tried the king fro treason. He was found guilty and then put to death.
France did not only have foreign enemies but it also had internal enemies. A Jacobin leader named Maximillian Robespierre slowly rose to power. He began to build a "republic of virtue" by wiping out every piece of Frances past. They closed all churches and got rid of Sundays in the calendar because they though of religion as old fashioned and dangerous. The period of his rule became known as the reign of terror. A revolution began but anyone who disobeyed was put to death.
From now on the calendar will now have twelve months of thirty days and no Sundays within a week.
